Link Chains and 3D Printing

One such technology is 3D printing. This method of production allows for a much faster manufacturing time than traditional methods, especially when the chain is printed in a horizontal position. However, the tensile strength of a printed chain link depends on the size and the way it is positioned during the printing process. Consequently, the aim of this article was to determine the effects of different input factor values on the tensile strength of polymer material chain links fabricated by 3D printing.

The experimental results were mathematically processed in order to obtain some empirical mathematical power-type function models that highlight the influence of certain variables on the tensile behavior of these oval-shaped chain links. These models can help to identify the best conditions for printing these types of chains in terms of their tensile strength. This information could be useful in the design of future chains that are directly manufactured by 3D printing and therefore do not require an additional assembly operation involving separately manufactured chain links.
