Gateway to Psychedelic Healing: Exploring Dispensaries

EUGENE, Ore. — Wind chimes and tie-dye mattresses greet customers at Epic Healing Eugene, America’s first legal psilocybin service center. A waitlist of more than 3,000 people is waiting to be guided through trips that some say result in vivid geometric shapes, a loss of identity and a sense of oneness with the universe.

Psilocybin, which is found in magic mushrooms, has long been known as a powerful tool for treating depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, though the drug is still illegal to buy, grow or possess in many places. But as laws loosen, mushroom retailers are popping up all over the country. In some cases, they’re using cannabis retail models to navigate a murky grey area.

In Canada, stores with names like Fun Guyz and Shroom City are easy to spot thanks to paintings of rainbow-hued fungi on their storefronts. But despite the bright signs, the shops aren’t fooling police. In fact, the Winnipeg Police Service says it’s been working with a federal inspector to monitor magic mushroom dispensaries in the city and hasn’t issued any tickets yet.

Zoomers is another newcomer to the psilocybin space. The store calls itself the nation’s first medical psilocybin dispensary and advertises its products in local media, including Westword. Its founder, who prefers to be identified only as James Lyman, is new to the business but willing to learn from anyone. His goal is to bring psilocybin out of the shadows and give people access.
