EZPAWN, or pawnbrokers, are one of the oldest financial institutions around. They have been around since America was being settled, and they are as prevalent today as ever. Basically, you bring in something of value (usually jewelry) and the pawnbroker will loan you cash against that item. If you pay back the loan within a certain period of time, you get your item back. If you don’t, the pawnbroker will keep your item and sell it to make a profit.
Most people who bring items into a pawn shop want the instant cash they provide. They may also be interested in getting their item back for a higher price at a later date, when it might be sold at an auction house. Some of the items brought in to a pawn shop include rare coins, antiques, electronics and more.
The show revolves around a family-owned Las Vegas pawn shop called Gold and Silver Pawn. The shop is run by three generations of Harrisons, which include Richard “Old Man” Harrison, his son Rick and grandson Corey. The show is fun to watch because it features some interesting items that people bring in. There is also a lot of squabbling and posturing between the guys, which makes for good entertainment value.
Another fun aspect of the show is when an expert comes in to appraise an item. It is hilarious to see the sellers try to justify their asking prices with these experts. For example, when the expert says the rare tuba is worth X amount of money, the seller will often reply with a price that is well above what the experts are willing to pay for it.
