The tropical island paradise of the Maldives has long been a popular romantic getaway – think My Maldives hotels set on private islands, rooms cantilevered over the water, and plenty of activities that bring couples closer together. Now, it’s also becoming the destination to celebrate weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. Here’s why.
The Maldives is a beautiful and safe destination, but travellers should exercise a high degree of caution at all times, particularly in crowded areas and around water, where gang-related violence occurs. Visitors should keep personal belongings secure, especially on the beach and in public spaces, and stay away from petty crime such as pickpocketing. Coastal waters can be hazardous and riptides occur, with several drownings each year.
While the curfew in Male has dissolved and covid-19 vaccination rates are improving, the government continues to tighten security, including restricting travel from some countries, and charging new airport and development fees starting January 2022. All travelers are required to present a negative PCR test result upon arrival and must pay an exit tax (see Travel Health).
Vaccinations are recommended for travellers to the Maldives, including tetanus, diphtheria, polio, measles, rubella, meningitis, influenza, hepatitis A and B, and mumps. For a complete list of vaccines and other health requirements, visit the CDC’s country information page for Maldives. Canadian citizens should also consult their local health authorities for advice on other potential vaccines and health concerns specific to their region.
